Harvest for the Hungry Garden

Dedication
of the Marge Cerletti Apple Tree
On
Sunday, April 23, after an Earth Day worship, we assembled
in the Harvest for the Hungry Garden to dedicate an apple tree
in the memory of Marge Cerletti. Marge was the co-founder of the
Garden, and a long-time peace activist.
Her
advice: “Forget the Twinkies; eat your fruits and
vegetables.”
Let
it be so!

The
Harvest for the Hungry Garden was founded in 1987 by Muchtar
Salzmann, owner of Emerisa Gardens, and Marge Cerletti, both of whom
wanted to do something about hunger in their community. Christ Church
United Methodist loaned them the use of a 3/4 acre parcel of land
behind the church as part of its
contribution to helping to feed low-income residents in Sonoma County.
In 1987 the Harvest Garden was essentially two open fields. Now it
boasts 28 raised beds devoted to growing organic produce and flowers,
all watered with drip irrigation. It also provides local residents with
an ecological learning center
with extensive vegetable and flower beds,
wildlife habitat and native plant areas, medicinal plant garden, pond
area, backyard demonstration garden, and regular workshops on organic
gardening and native habitat development.
Relying exclusively on volunteer labor, the Harvest
Garden delivers hundreds of pounds of organically grown produce each
week to hunger programs in Santa Rosa.
